The first few Sabbath albums sits roughly on the same level for me, I don't have a particular favourite. Main limitations: none of the songs here are in my upper echelon of punk, and Poly Styrene isn't necessarily one of my favourite punk vocalists either.Ī seminal album and deservedly makes the list for its influence. Solid material too, which Poly Styrene manages to suitably screech her way through.

Germ Free Adolescents is raw, abrasive, at times warp-speed punk and given a point of interest/difference with the use of the sax. It is a good album for sure and easy to see how it helped to influence, for example, the Riot Grrl movement in the early '90s although Poly Styrene's feminist tag is less obvious here. Germ Free Adolescents was one of my honourable mentions but didn't quite make the cut, placing somewhere around 16-20th based on the early years up to 1980. There was a 'name your 15 favourite punk albums' thread a few days ago. The first few Sabbath albums sit roughly on the same level for me, I don't have a particular favourite. Best 'barn find' of the list so far.Ī seminal album and deservedly makes the list for its influence. It's a smoky, narcotic, buried neck-deep in peat kind of album, aiming to tempt you in with unholy delights. And so the album proceeds through a melange of cohesive styles through to its excellent closer, all brought together by Dr John's languid voodoo-priest vocal delivery. On Danse Kalinda Ba Doom there's a free-form approach going on, but where the varied instruments are serving the structure of the song.
It fits lock-step with Rain Dogs and I really enjoyed the meandering, swampy arrangement on the opener Gris Gris Gumbo Ya-Ya. When I researched the meaning of Gris-Gris, I had the sense this album may prove a curiosity. Until three days ago I had never so much as heard of Dr. However, it is unusual, frequently surreal and most importantly interesting. This isn't a one-listen-and-love album I'd need more time to unpick the songs. Lost me a touch somewhere towards the midsection but snapped back towards the end (bearing in mind it was background music rather than a focused listening session). It starts off in vaudevillian fashion on Singapore and captured my attention immediately, strengthened by the low and menacing Clap Hands. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Rain Dogs. Tom Waits is an artist I have some familiarity with, yet haven't ventured much into his catalogue - possibly only Swordfishtrombones. GOING TO A GO GO (Smokey Robinson & the Miracles)ĥ0.
